Northern & Southern Lights XIII: Pulse at the Threshold is the concluding work of Şennur Üzgen’s thirteen-piece Northern & Southern Lights series.
In this final painting, the focus shifts from spectacle to presence. The aurora is no longer portrayed as a celestial phenomenon but as a subtle pulse suspended between appearance and disappearance. Existing at the limits of perception, light becomes something quieter, more intimate, and more enduring.
A delicate band of light stretches across the horizon, neither fully emerging nor completely fading away. The surrounding darkness does not oppose it; instead, it becomes the space that allows its continued existence. Here, absence and presence coexist in a fragile equilibrium.
Within the language of Surrexpressionism, light is treated not as illumination but as a living presence. It becomes an inner rhythm that persists beyond visibility, while the horizon transforms into a threshold where atmosphere, memory, and perception converge.
As the final work of the series, Pulse at the Threshold reflects on continuity, resilience, and the quiet persistence of life. The light remains not as an event, but as a trace of being—a reminder that what endures is often what is least visible.
